Who’s emerging as one of Britain’s best young Cruiserweights?

We are excited to show you one of Matty’s latest write-ups from www.helium.com

When it comes to exciting young fighters Britain is full of them, from the well known Amir Khan (WBA champion at Light Welterweight) to the emerging Nathan Cleverly. Though if you scratch beneath the surface you fight a lot of skilled fighters just starting to make a name for themselves domestically. The under the radar fighters haven’t been seen internationally and even their TV exposure in Britain is limited but they are making waves in the trade publications. One such fighter is the young (21) Matty Askin who is emerging as one of Britain’s best young Cruiserweights.

Born in the late 1980′s Askin now lives in Blackpool in the North West of England and has really gone from being a talented amateur to be a top professional prospect. Having come to national prominence as one of the best amateurs out there in 2008 where, aged just 19, he won the 2008 ABA title at Cruiserweight. Having taken up the sport just a few years previous this was an amazing achievement for the large lad who was already standing well over 6 foot (he now stands at a massive 6’4”). Using his imposing size and accurate fast jab aided by a 77” reach Askin would make an impact as a professional just months after his ABA triumph out pointing experienced Paul Bonson in November of 2008.

Although the experienced Zimbabwean Hastings Rasani extended Askin for 6 rounds in Matty's longest fight so far it was a mostly one sided affair with Askin taking a comfortable but messy points decision against a man who's shared a ring with David Haye and Tony Bellewin the past. The fight with Rasani wasn't the most impressive with both men wrestling as much as boxing as Askin's inexperience was shown up time and time again though Rasani seemed more content to make Askin look bad than to try and win the bout himself.

As disappointing as the fight with Rasani was it wouldn't take long for Askin to re-establish himself in style. Fighting experienced Matthew Ellis, a once highly touted fighter himself, Askin was just too much and too fast as he was able to land his shots almost at will. It would take long for him to land a blow on Ellis that saw Ellis not bothering to beat the count. Askin, now 6-0 (3) as a professional has recently climbed into the top 10 British Cruiserweights (Boxrec.com have him as the 7th best Brit whilst Boxing Monthly rate him at 9). In an upcoming fight Matty is scheduled to faces the “Furness Fight Factory” coach Lee Kellett, though the fight is in some doubt currently due what appears to a mess up by the BBBofC. If the fight falls through expect to see Askin fighting a replacement on the card as he continues to improve.
