Askin softens the Blackpool rock Ellis

Collyhurst and Moston Cruiserweight Matty Askin stunned a packed Robin Park Arena on Saturday by knocking out his bitter rival, the experienced Mathew Ellis of Blackpool.

Askin did so in one-minute and forty seconds of the first round at the Wigan venue.

For a week before the contest, Ellis was appearing every night in the Blackpool evening newspaper giving his views on what he intended to do to Askin.

He said his intention was to send him, and coach Brian Hughes, back to school. He said after hammering Askin he would go on to win the British title.

But Ellis never laid a glove on the fleet-footed 19-year-old youngster who took his opponent apart in the short time the bout lasted.

The Collyhurst and Moston boxer used a whip-like left jab that shook Ellis down to his toes and brought gasps of admiration from the audience.

He doubled these punches as Ellis rushed forward into a salvo of strikes that were delivered crisply and accurately, right from the shoulder and direct from the boxing text book.

As the contest progressed, Ellis, known as the Blackpool Rock, walked straight into a perfectly delivered right cross from Askin and dropped to the canvas, out for the count.

Ronnie Davis, the former trainer of Chris Eubanks, was Ellis’ corner man and said: “What a knockout!” He went on to praise the Collyhurst boxer. “This kid could become a first class fighter. He is big (6ft 3ins) boxes well, and can punch with authority.”

The referee Phil Edwards said: “It was a terrific right hand wallop.”

This was Askin’s ninth successive victory as a professional. Chief coach Hughes was delighted: “Matty boxed well. I know it did not last long, but in the short time it did the lad boxed splendidly. He’s got a lot to learn and I’m in no rush to push him. These big fellows take time to develop.”
