Matty Askin Signs with Ricky Hatton

The boxing career of Blackpool fighter Matty Askin has taken a hugely significant turn.

The unbeaten cruiserweight has signed up with Ricky Hatton Promotions.

Askin, who joined the paid ranks after winning the Amateur Boxing Association cruiserweight title last spring, has penned a six-fight deal with Hatton, the world light-welterweight champion, who is turning his attention to promotion.

The contract is for an initial 12 months and he is likely to make his debut under the Hitman’s banner at the MEN Arena in Manchester in March.

By that time, Askin should have fully recovered from a shoulder injury he sustained while beating Battersea’s Nick Okoth on points at the Tower Circus in Blackpool last Saturday.

The Hatton team are signing up a number of promising North West fighters and believe that Askin has plenty of potential.

Askin’s first two fights as a professional – both victories – were on shows put on by VIP Promotions, based in Manchester.

His career will be still be handled by veteran Mancunian fight trainer Brian Hughes.
